Alaska Native Corporations:

Thirteen regional corporations and over 200 community/village and urban corporations were formed as a result of the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Each ANCSA Corporation distributed stock in 100 share blocks as a birthright to its shareholders. Since then many of these corporations have opened the doors for new borns to join in ownership interest in these companies. Today these corporations are alive and flourishing and produce shareholder employment opportunities, scholarships and internships. These ANCSA Corporations endeavor to perpetuate self-determination and keeps the Native culture thriving.

8(a) Programs

The government has allowed these corporations to benefit from the 8(a) program to assist and mentor these corporations to develop more employment opportunities for its ever increasing large shareholder base. The ANCSA Corporation’s shareholder base is comprised of some of the most disadvantaged people in the United States. Participation in the 8(a) program is helping ANCSA corporations in reaching their goal of assisting their shareholder base in achieving the goal of self-determination. The shareholder base is mostly Alaska based however, many live outside the borders of Alaska. The ANCSA corporations have grown its subsidiaries beyond the borders of Alaska and now provide employment and internship opportunities not only in Alaska but throughout the United States.

  • Under proposed “SBA 8(a)” program rules, corporations who plan to take advantage of the “8(a)” programs will now be required to submit information to SBA showing how their “8(a)” participation has benefited their local communities, including funding cultural programs and providing employment assistance, jobs, scholarships and internships.

Welcome to Career Opportunities within the Native Community

AlaskaNativeJobs.com was created based on a need to highlight the many jobs available in the Native community and attract the most qualified candidates. According to Alaska Business Monthly:
  • “Native organizations bring in 71 percent of the revenue represented by all industries that made the Top 49 companies in Alaska. They also employ more than 58 percent of all Alaska employees. They provide 83 percent of the jobs provided by all companies on the list”.
  • “These companies are the foundation for a healthy Alaskan economy. Though many Native corporations work on a worldwide scale, their operations are based in Alaska, bringing dollars into the state, versus other large companies with headquarters elsewhere who provide jobs, but take dollars out of the state into their operations offices”.
The Alaska Native Job Bank is a collaborative coordinated central clearing house for employment positions at Native companies as well as non-profits, health consortiums and tribal organizations.

The Talent Bank has a goal of creating a pool of talent for Native organizations to draw from as their needs arise.

At a congressional hearing Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri forcefully challenged Alaska Native Corporations in the Native 8(a) programs to employ more tribal members/shareholders.

We can triumph over her challenge by collaborating and raising tribal member/shareholder employment levels across the board. This can be achieved by collaboratively seeking out talented tribal members/shareholders through a unified website focused on attracting and creating a pool of talent.

Finding qualified tribal members/shareholders is achievable due to over 37 years of a combined effort in investing in tribal/shareholder scholarships, internships and mentor programs.

To meet the above challenge AlaskaNativeJobs.com will help enable further use of Public Law 93-638 to take advantage of the Native hire preference if Natives qualify for jobs within the Native community. See Public Law 93-638 Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act whereby qualified Alaska Natives/American Indians are given preference if qualified.

AlaskaNativeJobs.com will primarily be focused on promoting jobs and making it easier to view and apply for jobs available in the Native community on one website with an emphasis on lowering the high Native unemployment rate.

  • The Denali Commission report indicates that Native unemployment is known to be three times the national average and at villages the unemployment rate can be a staggering 90% of the population. This is due to a lack of an economic base.
Through unity of organizations and individuals collaborating and showcasing the jobs available in the Native community and utilizing one website to post jobs and view applicants, a vision of “Empowering Natives through employment” is anticipated. This will help decrease the social barriers and aliments of the Native community.

“Through Unity We Can Make a Difference”

In order to identify qualified candidates a system is now in place at AlaskaNativeJobs.com so that potential employers can search the resume database by affiliation with: Regional Corporation, Urban Corporation, Village Corporation, village community, tribal membership or any other ethnic background.

While a goal is to decrease the high Native unemployment rate, the Alaska Native Job Bank and Talent Bank is designed to encourage ALL candidates from all backgrounds to apply for jobs and post profiles and resumes on this website.

In addition to the highly anticipated use of this website, a link is available for posting FREE pertinent Native community announcements and calendar events; such as annual meetings, board elections, community meetings, job fairs etc. All postings are subject to approval.
